We have many families at Cornerstone and although a lot of the focus is on the children for the holidays, we try to make Christmas special for the mothers and fathers that live with us, too. Christmas elves try to provide gift cards, toiletries, gift sets, watches, purses or hat and scarf sets. If you are interested in donating new items or giving a financial donation towards Christmas please e-mail Beth Nicholls at firstname.lastname@example.org
Over 60 families are sheltered at Cornerstone each night. This can total about 200 parents and children. We accept children from newborn through teen and with that many kids around, life at CCO is usually exciting and lively. Each of our families are given a room or bed area so they can enjoy time together and find quieter moments for schoolwork and rest. This is an example of a family room at Cornerstone.
The winter newsletter is in the mail! If you would like to view an on-line version click the ‘newsletter’ title found above. Read about a senior citizen group who does great things for the poor or about apartment hunting in Chicago. We’ve included some small articles about some big improvements going on in our buildings. Good things are happening at Cornerstone! Patricia and her two teenage sons, ages 16 and 17 are thrilled to be moving into their own apartment. CCO is one of the few shelters in Chicago that accepts teenage boys. We were happy for our time with Patricia’s family and we are glad to see them go on to a more stable housing situation. Housing Opportunities for Women have a long history of assisting Chicago’s homeless.
