Sylvia Center Access Project

In 2001, in response to a growing need for more beds and services for the homeless, Cornerstone Community Outreach purchased a five story building across the street from our original location. This new space – Sylvia Center – now houses many of our staff offices, our overnight shelter and day program for 90 single women, two shelter programs for homeless families (approximately 150 men women & children), an overnight housing and daytime program for elderly and/or disabled single men AND our shelter “free store”.

Due to the large number and variety of people living and working at Sylvia Center, our greatest need has always been a handicap accessible elevator. Mothers with strollers and elderly men and women are faced with the daily difficulty of taking the stairs to and from their living space. Donations of clothing and other goods have to be hauled up five flights to our free store.

Design plans for the new elevator are complete, and we have secured a bid to begin construction as soon as we have adequate funds. The entire project requires $390,000 – at this time we have raised $179,000. Any amount that you or your organization can give will be much appreciated!
