It is our privilege to welcome families of all descriptions who are experiencing homelessness. CCO operates two shelters for families, Sylvia Family Shelter and Hannah House Shelter, both welcome families who are homeless and provide them with individualized wrap-around services. These services are a personalized approach to assisting our shelter guests in moving from homelessness to permanent housing. It includes housing referrals, subsidized databases, job training, employment referrals, educational enrollment, counseling, medical referrals, information regarding life skills, after-school tutoring, individualized advocacy, nutritious meals, safe shelter, and more. These services look different for each individual and family we shelter because each person’s experiences, strengths, and needs are different.
Consider making a donation today that will assist the families sheltered at CCO to move from homelessness to housing!
Each person who comes through the doors of CCO has a unique history. The homeless father with children, parents with teens, pregnant women, people of all orientations, the elderly and aging, the physically challenged, are accepted at CCO. Case managers work alongside single adults and families to create individualized goals and assist with job training and referrals, education, transportation, benefits assistance, mental and physical health referrals and more. These wrap-around services are the stepping-stones to permanent housing and a stable future.
The holidays give a chance to celebrate each person who came through the doors of Cornerstone over the year and previous years. Today, Chicago Bears player Sam Acho and his teammates, with matching donations from The Chicago Bears, sponsored the parties for both the men and women at Cornerstone.
It was a great party, with food from Jewel Foods, Papa Johns and Aldi, and each person gets gifts of new items to help them out, from socks to hats, and everything in between. Thank you so much for your awesome support.
We want to say a very special thank you to the Coat Angels! The children sheltered at CCO have been blessed with the gift of warmth thanks to this fabulous group of volunteers and donors! Each year the Coat Angels visit CCO and deliver new coats, hats, gloves, and other winter wear accessories to our children. Thank you, Coat Angels!

The Holiday Season is here! When you reflect on what you are thankful for, whom you want to surprise with a gift, and what causes to support, consider helping a homeless family in Chicago. Every day more families experience homelessness for the first time.
Right now, over 40 families and 125 children are sheltered at Cornerstone. Every families path to housing is different, including the length of time it may take to get housed.
For $22.00 per night, CCO can provide three meals per day, case management, personal hygiene and clothing, and the safe place to sleep. As the average length of time it takes for a family to get housed is around one-hundred and eight days, that estimated cost per family is $4000.00. Half of that cost is paid for in part by the City of Chicago, however Cornerstone needs your help to pay for the other half!
You can provide this opportunity for success for a homeless family. Your support is what makes it possible. Every person and family who moves from homelessness to housing is a cause for celebration!
Today, and throughout this holiday season, please consider making a one-time or on-going donation as your Holiday Gift to help a homeless family get housed. Whether you can provide one night of shelter for $22, or a hundred nights, your donation will make a difference in the life of families experiencing homelessness. Make Your Donation Today!
CCO’s Annual Back-to-School Bash was a huge success! Families sheltered at CCO enjoyed dancing, music, pizza, cake, prizes, face-painting, and more. All school-aged children chose a new backpack, from a wide-range of styles, provided by the Northeastern Illinois University Alumni Association (NEIU). NEIU has provided and distributed backpacks and school supplies at the Back-to-School Bash for years. Thank you, NEIU!
Student volunteers from Uptown Christian School (UCS) set-up the room, served food, decorated, cleaned, and reassembled the dining room. The teens were willing, fun, and amazingly helpful. Thank you, UCS!
Education is a critical stabilizing force in the lives of homeless children. We are privileged to partner with our area school teachers and administrators to ensure that the children sheltered at CCO have the best education possible.
Every person who moves from homelessness to housing is a cause for celebration. We rejoice with every one of our residents who are able to turn a key and enter their home, whether it is a mom or dad with children, single senior citizen, couple with children, three-generational family, or young adult. Finding home is the next step in a new phase of life.
While staying at Cornerstone the case-management staff work hard to make sure each person receives the assistance and services available. The work with the residents is tracked closely to be able to monitor what works and what areas can be improved on. One area tracked is how many people who come to Cornerstone homeless, successfully move into permanent housing.
We are glad to announce, that the number of people that have been housed this year so far is up by 29 percent! Already 24 families and their children, and 51 single men and women, all of whom stayed in one of CCO’s shelters moved from homelessness to permanent housing. That’s 9 more families and 16 more men and women than this time last year.
All of this can only be accomplished by your support, the hard work of the people finding home, and Cornerstone’s staff. Please consider donating today to help this wonderful work continue, and more people find home.

Did you know that every night 330 people receive shelter from Cornerstone Community Outreach? This is both homeless families with children, and single adults.
Not only do they not have to sleep outside, they get nutritious meals, case management support, clothing, employment, education and every support available to them so that they can focus on what they need to do to get housed.
A donation of $4 from you, will provide one night of shelter. How? The cost per night for shelter is only $20. Grants that are awarded to Cornerstone will cover the other $16 per night. So with your gift of $4 per night, someone can receive shelter and these amazing services.
If you are already supporting Cornerstone, we appreciate you and
all you do. If you have been considering starting, or asking yourself how much should I give? Start by providing four days of shelter, for only $4 per day, for the homeless in Chicago.
Often something as simple as identification can stand in the way of job training, education, employment, and housing. CCO case managers work hard to get essential identification so that goals can be met. As a result, families and single adults are brought one step closer to stability and “finding home.”
In 2016, 331 Birth Certificates and State ID’s were obtained by those sheltered at CCO. Many people entering CCO have no identification or income. Staff work with shelter guests to secure ID so that they can access housing lists, job training, schooling, medical assistance, and more. Without identification, it is impossible to move forward to secure housing.
Thank you for celebrating this important 2016 success with us. In 2017, we hope you continue to be a part of the fabulous things happening in the lives of those who experience homelessness. Please consider donating today!
Each plate of food served in the CCO dining room help to bring nutrition, energy, and well-being to the children, adults, and senior citizens who dine with us. Nutrient-rich, balanced meals are central to CCO’s services.
To many of us, food is such a routine and expected provision that we forget it’s importance. But for those who are hungry, it is no small matter. Consistent, nutritious meals help to stabilize moods and focus attention on important tasks. It can help break people free of a survival mentality.
In 2016, over 200,000 meals are served in the CCO dining room. We are grateful to provide this core service.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating CCO’s fight against hunger. In 2017, we hope you continue to be a part of the fabulous things happening in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. Please consider making a donation today.
