One Father’s Struggle…

Lydell & Lydell III

“11:05am, December 4, 2002, he was born. Lydell Doss, III, arrived breach with his brown eyes wide open. It was beautiful to see his first movements and to hear his new born cries. One day later I would be crying in disbelief…”

Take a moment and read Lydell’s story, “I Decided to Stay.” It is a moving account of a father’s love for his son and his struggle to create a home for him.

CCO Supports Fathers

Felix & Felix

“Being his dad gives me joy, strength and hope for a better day.”
– Felix, pictured here with Felix Jr.

At Cornerstone Community Outreach (CCO) we are grateful for the opportunity to serve and witness the successes of many dedicated dads. Your donation allows us to continue to support the fathers who work so hard to stabilize their families.

For me, being a dad is about hearing my son say, “I love you” in the morning, and saying it again at bedtime. When I lost my wife, I could have given him to someone else, but he’s a part of me. When he tells me he loves me, I know I’m doing the right thing.

Being a dad is hard work. Anyone can be a dad, but it takes a real man to be there for your kids and take care of them. Every day, I try to give him what I felt I missed in my own life. Being his dad gives me joy, strength and hope for a better day.

-Felix

This Father’s Day honor the dads at CCO by making a donation that will help bring their families one step closer to permanent housing. Thank you!

We see success in the lives of our shelter guests every day! Learn more at Our Stories!

National Armed Forces Day

Homeless-Veteran-Sign1Today is National Armed Forces Day. All the staff, residents and volunteers at CCO would like to remember our homeless shelter guests who have served our country in the armed forces. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimate that 62,619 veterans are homeless on any given night. Let’s serve our brave men and women especially in their time of need.

I Decided To Stay

“When I got to the courthouse my lawyer informed me that the sheriff was coming and I was going to be arrested. They wanted to know if I was going to stay or run.

I decided to stay.”

LydellThe number of homeless fathers with children is increasing. It is our privilege to welcome dads with kids into CCO and help them achieve the success for themselves and their families. Take a few moments and read Lydell’s story here. Or take a look at the other success stories available in Our Story section on the right.

The changed lives you will read about would not be possible without your support. Thank you for donating today!

…A Place At CCO

Smiles

Mothers with children, fathers with children, couples with children, inter-generational families, single women, single men, persons with physical challenges, all have a place at CCO.

“A July 2012 analysis by Chicago Coalition for the Homeless shows 105,338 Chicagoans were homeless in the course of the 2011-12 school year. This is 12% more than the 93,780 who were homeless a year earlier. The total is based, in part, on the rising enrollment of homeless students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS).” – Chicago Coalition for the Homelessness

At Cornerstone we hope to bridge the gap between homelessness and housing for our residents. By providing safe shelter, nutritious meals, case management services, referrals, physical- and mental-health services and a free store. We try to meet the needs of our residents by meeting them where they’re at and assisting them in finding permanent housing. And it’s always a joy to witness residents achieving their goals and moving toward self-sufficiency.

Congratulations, John!
