Special thanks to Helle Family who join us each year for the Greater Chicago Food Depository Hunger Walk 5k. The Helle Families walk creates a 1,070 food credit for CCO. The credit from our walkers ensures that our shelter guests eat warm, nutritious meals, and groceries are given to our food pantry patrons. Visit our Hunger Walk page to register to walk or donate today!
The walk begins on June 20th at 8am at Soldier Field. The course weaves through Chicago’s beautiful lakefront paths. Help fight hunger in Chicago by joining us for the Hunger Walk! Thanks!
The Chicago Police Department and Mariano’s Grocery Stores have joined forces to help fight hunger in Chicago. Shop at Mariano’s – Edgewater located at 5201 N. Sheridan Road in Chicago and purchase a pre-stuffed $5 or $10 bag of groceries that will go to one of food pantry patrons.
The 2013 Hunger and Homelessness Survey from the United States Conference of Mayors cited that 83% of cities had increased requests for food assistance and 91% reported that they had an increase in people asking for food assistance for the first time. This information confirms that many American’s experience food insecurity.
In 2014, CCO served over 236,600 plates of nutritious food and distributed over 7,500 bags of groceries. Be a part of CCO! Be a part of the fight against hunger!

Recently, CCO received this sweet letter from a young supporter:
“Dear Cornerstone, I am giving you $11.00 so you can feed the poor people and give them drinks. You guys could buy some nice hot soup so the poor people will have nice delicious hot soup.”
Wow! We are never too young (or too old) to care for others! If you are interested in donating to CCO click the donate button on the right. Your support helps homeless families and individuals receive safe shelter, nutritious meals, and intensive case management services.
This week, many of us will be celebrating Thanksgiving by enjoying a special meal with friends and family. CCO shelter guests are no exception. We are planning a yummy Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. While Thanksgiving is a special day with a special meal, everyday nutritious meals are served from the CCO kitchen. We are honored to fight hunger by preparing and serving food to hundreds of shelter guests each day.
For over 15 years CCO has enjoyed a valuable partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). The GCFD is Chicago’s food bank supplying over 650 pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters across the city. From July 2013 through June 2014 CCO received 502,000 pounds of food from GCFD, with an estimated value of $806,000. Fresh fruits and vegetables accounted for 25% of the total. Through our fabulous Hunger Walkers, grants and subsidies, we paid nothing for these valuable food items and have a remaining food credit of $1,506. The benefits are astonishing! We want to say a special thank you to our Hunger Walkers, GCFD, and all who have served or supported our meal programs. Thank you!
Take a moment to view the photo album from this years CCO Veteran Recognition Dinner. The CCO kitchen prepared a delicious meal that was enjoyed by all our shelter guests, our veterans were honored, and Theresa McCall sang beautifully for everyone. The National Veterans Art Museum provided military art mugs for our veterans. It was a beautiful evening for our CCO guests, staff and veterans.
To help homeless families they ran through 29 Chicago neighborhoods; they were cheered on by over 1 million spectators and crossed the finish line after running 26.2 miles! So far they have raised over half of their fundraising goal, and have just under a month left to meet it. Congratulate them, and encourage them for their hard work by donating to the team.Thank you for your commitment to charitable fitness and the shelter guests at CCO! What an awesome team!
