Team CCO is a great avenue for fitness enthusiasts to support a great cause while reaching running goals. Through training, volunteering, and fundraising, Team CCO strives to help fulfill our core mission which is…
Commitment, motivation, and inspiration are just a few of the words that describe Team CCO at this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon! Every member of the team “wowed” us with their commitment to crossing the finish line. They motivated us to support homeless services and inspired us to give! We want to extend our deepest thanks to each member of the team who endured 26.2 miles to help families and individuals who are sheltered at CCO. Every step you took brought someone closer to permanent housing. You have truly inspired us!
We also want to thank the support team who cheered everyone on at the Charity Block Tent. Your encouragement kept the team on the road to the finish line!

It’s only 4 days until the 13 members of Team CCO step over the starting line at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon! Members will be running 26.2 miles to make a difference for those sheltered at CCO! Now that’s commitment! You can help alleviate homelessness by donating today.
Since it origins, Team CCO has raised over $66,000 through the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Half Marathon, Shamrock Shuffle, Triathlon, and Mud Run. These dollars have helped provide nutritious food, safe shelter, and supportive services to families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Donations made through Team CCO have helped those sheltered at CCO to move from homelessness to housing.
Chris Spicer, Team CCO and CCO Board Member, recently completed the Chicago Half Marathon. He was worked to spread homeless awareness and funds for those sheltered at CCO. Here is an excerpt from Chris’ fundraising letter:
If you are homeless you face hard questions every day. Questions most of the people receiving this letter may have never had to ask themselves in their lives. Questions like, “Where will I sleep tonight?” or “How will I get my kids to school this week?” or “How do I get my family out of this situation?”
These are just a few hard and painful questions that you face daily when you are homeless. As I said earlier, questions most of us may never have to ask ourselves.
When we think of a homeless person many of us think of the guy asking for change on the corner or maybe on the train. These are the most visibly homeless people but they are not the majority. Most of the homeless population, you probably don’t even realize are homeless when you see them. They look just like you, me and our children.
I have recently had the pleasure of being added to the Board of Directors for Cornerstone Community Outreach. In the first meeting I attended I learned that the average age of a homeless Chicagoan is 9 years old. That’s right, the majority of homeless persons in Chicago are children.
I have also been able to help out on The Birthday Party Project that comes to CCO once a month and throws a party for every child sheltered at CCO that had a birthday that month. The kids smile and laugh and enjoy the cake and ice cream as much as my kids did at their birthday parties. They take the gift that is given to them and the expressions of joy brings tears to my eyes every time I help.
Today I got home from the running the Chicago Half Marathon in time to hear the sermon at my church. It was an incredible sermon on hope.
That is what the smiles on the faces of the kids at the birthday party were, Hope! Hope for a better future. That is what Cornerstone Community Outreach brings to every person it serves, Hope for a better future.
